Brown Oak

Brown Oak is technically not a distinct species of oak, but rather refers to oak (almost always English Oak or other European oak species) that has been infected with a fungus. This fungus (Fistulina Hepatica) has the effect, once the wood has been cut (and the fungus dies) of turning the it a deep brown color. 

Brown Oak is relatively scarce and we are very lucky to have secured a regular supply of logs

Book Matched

Bookmatching wood slabs is the practice of matching two slabs of wood , so that two adjoining surfaces mirror each other. We achieve this by using sequential slabs from the same log – see diagram

Your Table

The table in this page (sold) is an example of a table made from brown oak. The nature of this amazing oak means that colour, tone and figuring differ wildly from tree to tree, log to log and slab to slab. But they are all stunning We have a large selection of timber here from which we will be able to find that is perfect for your dining table. If you’d like to choose your timber youself then youre more than welcome to visit our workshop to do so. Please call us to arrange this.

These tables are made from raw slabs that begin at 54mm thick. After flattening the table has a finished thickness of between 40mm – 45mm. This oak is very dense. The finished table is very heavy.

Epoxy Resin 

A perfect slab of wood is near impossible to find. Most large slabs will have some natural splitting from the drying process, as well as split knots and various other natural features. We showcase these  features by using clear pouring resin to fill them.

Finish

After sanding, the table gets 5 coats of hard wax oil. This penetrates the wood whilst keeping the wood looking and feeling completely natural. We provide you with spray product for general cleaning and polishing.

Legs

The legs pictured on this page are designed to allow a bench to tuck neatly under the table. We are more than happy to offer any other steel legs you see on other tables on this site at no extra cost -please get in touch to discuss. As standard our legs are cleaned up with a high speed wire brush and the polished with natural bees wax – this gives a tarnished pewter look. Other options are nickel plate ot mat black powder coat
